Freemasonry

Freemasonry is one of the World’s oldest secular, charitable, fraternal organisations with over six million masons worldwide. It teaches self-knowledge through participation in a progression of ceremonies. The fundamental principles of Freemasonry are Brotherly Love, Relief and Truth.

There are more than 200,000 freemasons in England and Wales dispersed over 8,000 lodges, each with their own unique reason for making the original step of getting into freemasonry.

The United Grand Lodge of England (UGLE) is the governing body of freemasonry in England and Wales and each lodge has its own unique identifying number.

Every candidate for Freemasonry must affirm a belief in a single Supreme Being. This belief is a matter for the individual and Freemasonry recognises each person’s own beliefs. Religion and politics are never discussed within the Lodge.

Freemasonry was founded as a male-only society. There are now parallel Orders of Women Freemasons in the UK and abroad.
